Five sitting governors and a dozen Members of Parliament are under investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for theft, embezzlement, and money laundering running into billions of shillings.
In what could be one of the largest corruption probes in recent months, EACC has also recommended prosecution for three current governors and one former county boss.
Investigators say the suspects awarded tenders to shell companies owned by family members, inflated project costs, and siphoned funds meant for essential services like healthcare and water supply.
"We are looking at unexplained wealth, conflict of interest, and outright theft of public resources," an EACC official told this writer.
Counties such as Kiambu, Machakos, and Narok are said to be at the center of the storm, with forensic audits revealing secret bank accounts and offshore properties linked to the accused leaders.
Despite years of promises to fight corruption, the political elite continue to plunder county coffers while ordinary citizens struggle to access basic services. Civil society groups have accused the government of selective prosecution, arguing that cases involving powerful individuals are often bungled or quietly dropped.
As Kenyans demand accountability, the question remains: will these probes lead to convictions or will they fizzle out like countless others before them?
